Although pizza is most well known and probably most well loved in its traditional, round style covered in sauce, mozzarella cheese, and basil, there are so many styles and types that it would be a shame if everyone did not know of at least a few more.

If you have not tried any of the other varieties of pizza, then here are a few styles you might be willing to explore.

Margherita Style Pizza

Margherita style pizza is best known for its simplicity. It is named after the Queen Margherita of Italy, who was the wife of King Umberto I and first Queen of Italy. It is traditionally and simply made using toppings of tomato, mozzarella cheese, and fresh basil, which, not surprisingly, represent the red, white, and green of the Italian flag.

Your Traditional Neapolitan

This is as basic as basic gets with the base of the pizza pie being flat bread with oil, typically olive oil, some light tomato sauce, garlic, and oregano on top.

Although the Neapolitan originated from Naples, Italy, it is considered the traditional pizza pie of America.

Deep Dish Pizza

Deep Dish Pizza is known to have originated in Chicago. It is well known for its meal-like substantial taste and for the thick crust and extra order of cheese, as well. The sauce for deep-dish pizza is typically a little sweeter than your traditional Neapolitan pizza sauce. The coating of the crust is usually one of additional cheese and the topping is typically a sausage topping.

California Pizza

California Pizza is typically well known as West Coast pizza, as well. This pizza is typically considered a lighter fare pizza sometimes with very little sauce or even no sauce at all and just a drizzle or two of extra virgin olive oil.

Seafood, basil, all types of greens, artichokes, or even vegetables such as sautéed eggplant is typically found on California pizza.

White Pizza

If you are not crazy or even a little sensitive to the acidity of tomatoes, then white pizza is the perfect alternative for you. White pizza is simply pizza with no tomatoes or sauce on it. White pizza is topped with ricotta cheese, olive oil, and mozzarella and parmesan cheese.

If you are a little bit tired of the traditional style pizza and want to try something new, any of these pizzas will delight your taste buds. Moreover, make it your business every occasionally to try one of those new delectable looking pizza recipes you see at your local pizzeria or restaurant. You never know, your taste buds may just be surprised.
